Mid
Treat grass as Qiyana’s default neutral state—enter vision with an element already loaded, use grass to hide the second decision, river to pin the catch, and rock only once the target is already low enough to finish
In lane, most real kills are staged: clip them with a short trade, keep the element you want, then punish the next step after they spend the spell that makes your all-in awkward, instead of turning every trade into a raw E opener
Qiyana’s best games start one lane-width outside mid—in river pockets, jungle turns, and objective entrances where terrain changes the fight—and recent data says that pressure is much sharper when the first real buy arrives on time and the game is still loose enough for an early lead to matter
Start grass by default if you do not already know exactly how the next two seconds will play out. Grass gives you time to walk up, hide whether you are re-committing, and keep E available until the enemy shows their answer. Swap to river when the whole point is certainty—catching someone in a corridor, setting up a gank, or making sure the first target cannot slip the combo. Save rock for the part where the kill is already forming and you want the execute to finish it. If you are unsure, grass is usually the element that preserves the most options instead of forcing the earliest guess.
